We’re all well aware of the ‘pleb’ scandal that surrounded Andrew Mitchell and what he did or did not call the policemen as he cycled past. I’m certainly not going to throw my opinion on what happened into the mix. But seeing the Chief Whip on his bike, together with David Cameron, Boris Johnson, Nick Clegg and George Osborne all championing the virtues of cycling to work, it did bring to mind an interesting question.
Where do all these carbon friendly, pedal happy politicians keep their bikes at Number 10?
Coming from a family with 4 bikes I’m well aware of the importance of keeping them somewhere safe. And I think it would be true to say that David Cameron would certainly be very up on security when it comes to where he keeps his bike having had it stolen not once but twice in the last 4 years! No padlock and railings for him any more.
So perhaps lockable bike sheds are the answer at Number 10. And we all remember what went on behind the bike sheds at school don’t we, John and Edwina?!
But to be quite honest I can’t imagine bike security in Downing Street really being an issue – security officers andpolicemen are a rather good deterrent so you’d have to be rather misguided to try and whip one of these bikes away from under their noses.
That really is the ultimate in thief proofing your bike shed!
But for those of us who don’t have a team of policemen stationed at home we have to think a little more carefully about finding somewhere safe and secure for our bikes. Locked away and out of sight is the obvious answer. But where?
Well, there’s always inside the house which is OK if you don’t mind mud tracks and an obstacle course when you’re trying to get the kids out of the door to school in the morning. Although I suppose you could always hang the bikes on a wall out of the way, stick a couple of flowers in the spokes and they could double up as modern art!
Or do what I do and keep your bike in the bedroom and get your husband to sleep in the shed! Only kidding – although there are nights when that does seem like a favourable option….!
Seriously though, do consider:
- Lockable bike sheds in the garden do seem to me to be the best solution, available in wood, metal or plastic – whichever takes your fancy.
- Double doors are always best to get the bikes in and out easily and one good piece of advice is to keep the doors visible from your house.
- Having no windows is always a good idea too to keep your bikes away from prying eyes.
- And it would make sense to get yourself a good lock and padlock to make it extra secure.
I hope you’re impressed by my research..!
So check out Jack’s range of bike storage that includes lockable wooden bike stores and metal sheds. And there’s also a secure, lockable steel roll top box for that extra peace of mind – now that’s one for David’s Christmas list I think!
Shed loads of good advice. all the best Joanna.
Best wishes
